Heat strengthened glass is more common form of glass as it’s less prone to spontaneous breakage compared to tempered glass. It is also approximately twice the mechanical strength of annealed glass of equivalent thickness. The drawback with heat strengthened glass is that it can be susceptible to fabricating debris, which becomes troublesome when using scrapers to remove debris.
Tempered Glass:
This type of glass is what is known as ‘safety glass’ – this is because, when broken, the glass breaks into small granular chunks as appose to sharp shards. This type of glass can also be problematic for window cleaners due to fabricating debris.
Annealed Glass:
This type of glass is relatively easy to clean and tends not scratch easily when using a scraper to remover ground in debris. When this type of glass breaks it tends to break in large shards.
Low-E:
This type of glass as a thin coating on the inner surface of the glass. Because of this the glass has thermal insulating and UV ray protecting properties. It is important not to use metallic objects, such as metal scrapers, to remove debris as this could lead to discolouration of the glass.
